More sweet and savory smells of spring

The last week of April promises the sweet smell of the Locust tree in the air.  Every year I forget about this until I am walking down Riverside and the smell hits me.  Such a sweet, let me bottle it, smell.  I can’t even describe it.  It is close to the smell of Wisteria only better.

Here's the tree: nothing special until you walk down the sidewalk under it's canopy and the smell makes you want to just camp out right there.

I love the color combo here.

The blooms and smell are only with us for 2 weeks especially if it rains.

And now for the savory.  Last year I noticed this bush… really pretty maroon blooms against dark green leaves.  Then one day my neighbor Joel, who knows how much I love photographing flora and fauna asked if I had ever smelled the bush that sits between his yard and his neighbor’s yard.   It was this bush. It is called the Spice Bush and it smells yummy.   Some say it smells like wine but I think it smells like dinner!!!

The spice bush blossom smells peppery.
