Tennessee Photographer: Retreat!

This past weekend I attended a retreat here in Nashville under the guidance of the wildly creative minds of Whitney Ferre’ of  Creatively Fit and Minton Sparks.  These women bring such an everlasting energy to the world.  Whitney, who believes in creating change to make a better world and Minton, who shares her talent at wheeling you in to her fascinating life stories.

I was so excited to attend this, I had no idea what to expect.   No great expectations!

I found a theme to this weekend…. circles, contrast and change!

We all sat in a circle with three candles in the center.  The first night we introduced ourselves through these three questions:  What do I come from? Where am I at this moment?  What do I want from this?   It turns out that we all basically come from the same thing and that we want the same thing, we are just on different tracks of our journey.  How comforting!   I was really looking forward to writing and doing some art but mostly writing.

Contrast. A little foreshadowing of the weekend would hold.

Day two brought lots of writing and painting and storyboards.

Our first exercise was to write about “What will happen if I say yes?” .   Do we all live in fear of success, even those who do not appear to be afraid?  If I say yes, I feel like my whole world will open up!  So many things to say yes to.   Saying yes to the things I want instead of no to those I don’t, just like editing in instead of editing out!

Incredible leaded glass windows at Scarritt Bennett. I have been to this location many times photographing weddings. Usually when a photo of a window happened there was some other element involved: a bouquet, a bride or her groom. How nice to be able to really investigate these without the time constraint of a wedding day!

Then we wrote about blue and the kitchen we grew up in and a letter about our gifts from the perspective of one of the people we listed that we loved.  Mine was from a young child.  Blue was cool, sad, loyal, thought provoking, summer, pretty skies, clean water….the kitchen brought up all kinds of childhood memeories…mostly those that made me blue but also made me who I am today.  A person that I love and who was the first on my “people that I love list”.

Getting my right brain “exercised” help me tap into my subconscious!  We gathered images from magazines, images that we liked and spoke to us.   I made five storyboards which I am still working on writing a narrative to go along with them.  The first one included the words “Big Dream”, clouds, Italy, a photo by one of my nature photographer idols, Galen Rowell, a beautiful blue sky with a heart.   My dream of traveling and photographing and finding my one big human LOVE, a man, my partner.  My next one is BELIEVE.  Natural images of a hand full of olives, a David Arms painting of a bird with the caption, “I will trust, I will not be afraid”, a progression of a leaf turning with raindrops.    The next one contained themes of country roads, music, little kids and animals, dried hydrangeas, embracing growing old and growing up and again trust.  The fourth storyboard was about survival.  Blue images of winter, beautiful pink peonies, a bird and some words by Mary O”Hara, “A dreamer-you know-it’s a mind that looks over the edge of things”. The last one is nostalgic with images of old bottles, a sepia image of a boy and a dog, the speedometer of an old car and a couture Manuel jacket.  I can’t wait to write more about these storyboards as I feel like they really help keep my dreams up front, in front of all the crap that crowds my brain.

As this year ends and a new begins we often focus our energy on change. Change is good! And my life is changing and I like it.

As you can tell I totally enjoyed this retreat.  I loved the energy that all the women had and was able to really make a dent in forging a new path for myself.  To learn more about workshops and retreats from Whitney and Minton, go here and here.

Tennessee Nature Photographer: Chihuly at Cheekwood

Nashville says goodbye to the Chihuly exhibit at Cheekwood today.   What a lovely addition to Nashville and Cheekwood’s history!  How in the world will Cheekwood ever top this or at least something on the same level at the Chihuly exhibit.  It seemed like only yesterday that the announcement was made that the stunning glass sculptures would grace the grounds of Cheekwood and now sadly it has come to a close.   It was reported that 8000 people passed through the gates on the free day on October 20th.   And in the last few weeks the lines to get onto the ground for night time viewing were a mile or two long.   These photos are from my night visit and from the free day.  I also visited in June during the day.  See my post here.

Professional Head Shots: Gail Adkins, Redesigning Magician

I recently met Gail at my house to produce some images of her for use in her business.  Gail owns a company called, Change Magic Interior Design.  She is truly a magician offering her clients a fresh perspective on their spaces.  I know just having her in my home for an hour I could feel her energy and insight.  She inspired me to change the color of my walls in the kitchen and dining room and to change the color of my cabinets.  Sometimes all we need is a little color change to make things all good!

Nashville Portrait Photographer: Happy New Year!!

And Happy New Decade!  Two thousand ten. Twenty ten.  Sounds good to me!  Thanks to everyone who has supported my work and trusted me to photograph them.  2009 was a great year for change, learning, starting new things, getting back into art!   Over the Christmas holiday I headed to Baltimore to spend time with my brother and his family.  One day my sister in law and I went to Winterthur in Wilmington, Delaware.  It was a winter wonderland!!

Nashville Tennessee: Painting Workshop at the Frist

Words can not describe what this past weekend meant to me as an artist.  Thank goodness I brought my camera as being inspired for me can come at any time and being inside the Frist with all the play of sunlight inside the building brought me much happiness!  In addition to attending this workshop I also participated in an artisan fair at a local church.  The church thing left me feeling very vulnerable and while I did not end up with two masterpieces from the Frist workshop I learned alot about myself. Enlightening, rewarding, renewing, refreshing….. a renewal of my spirit, not to mention the chance to meet some new friends is what I took away from the workshop.   I first learned about the workshop from my friend Ashley Mayfield.  The teacher of this workshop was Michelle Herbert, an artist, entrepreneur, owner of the wonderful shop, Shimai.  I thoroughly enjoyed myself and while I do not consider my paintings complete I am well on my way to re-igniting my painting passion.

Nashville Nature Photographer: Old Hickory Lake Foggy Morning

Waking up this morning I could feel it.  The damp cold of what promised to be a beautiful foggy morning in this amazing neighborhood of mine.  As Bear and I walked around the corner of Jones and 8th by the church heading toward the lake I could only see the trees in the foreground.  Thick, dense fog covered the lake blocking my views of the other side; the sun was just beginning to burn off the blanket.  Bear and I continued on our walk joining up with Cindy and Molly and as we made our way back up Riverside we slid behind Di’s house and up on the deck.  This is the vantage point of the first image and then headed a couple houses down to Shane’s to check out the vista from his yard and the last images were created.  I love the fog when I don’t have to drive in it and can just enjoy the anticipation of what will be presented to me once the sun does his job.

Artist Spotlight: Ashley Mayfield

Today begins the first Artist Spotlight on my blog.  I know so many wonderful visual artists who share their vision with the world.

Ashley Mayfield is an incredibly creative and amazing ceramic sculptor.   She lives just one block over from me and creates whimsical works of art with a real organic feel to them.  The other day I stopped by her backyard studio to look around and ask questions.

All of Ashley’s work is created by hand there is no wheel involved and then baked right in her studio.
